Isaac Steinberg has been photographing abstractions, landscapes, planets, and people since childhood. He has captured photos deep in Nicaraguan jungles, trekking in the himalayas, from astronomy observatories, and down city streets. Using his camera as a philosophical tool to decipher reality, he explores meaning in the abstract and the absolute. Originally from NYC, he lives in San Francisco and works in renewable energy.

Maryam “Sanaz” Safanasab (b. Tehran-Iran) is a visual artist who lives and works in San Francisco. Her work has been exhibited at many institutions and galleries including SFAC, SOMArts, ICASF, 500 Capp Street, Southern Exposure, Root Division. Sanaz holds an MFA in Art from San Francisco State University and is the recipient of several awards such as the Cadogan Contemporary Art Award from San Francisco Foundation and the Graduate Student Award for Distinguished Achievement from SFSU. Her work has been profiled in KQED, Berkeley’s News, Golden Gate Xpress, and UC Berkeley Extension’s Art & Literature Review.

Priyatam is an artist, poet, and ai engineer. Based out of San Francisco, with his art and writer’s studio on Cobb mountain in Northern California, his art is inspired by the dance of the human emotion and organic bodyscapes in nature, as he discovers his relationship to advaitia and oneness. In his process he starts with no assumptions of the final composition: he surrenders: creation happens when the thinker and thinking become One. His mediums include photography, printmaking, drawings, encaustic and mixed media. His art was shown in Mendocino Art Center, Sebastopol Center for the Arts, Provincetown Center for the Arts, Gualala Art Center, Middletown Art Center, and other fineart galleries in Northbay.

Come see the art of Waverly Liu this weekend at Upside Artspace’s Open Studios in the Mission!

Born and raised in China, educated at California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts) and Brown University, waverly is an artist and curator who explores artistic language in printmaking, textiles, watercolour, and plein air painting. Her works have been exhibited in China, Japan, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand, and United States. She is also active in curatorial and writing projects connecting artists from different regions of the world. She spends time between the SF bay area, South China, and Sweden.

Before my return to the bay area this summer, three months of continuous rain in South China had taken a toll on my morale. It was the California sun that has lifted me out of the darkness, and offered endless inspiration and stimulation to me. The strong contrast between light and shadow, the colour saturation, the ever changing sky, the layers of greens, the vast variety of plants, everything is fresh to me. Painting outdoors is a relatively recent practice to me, as I had been mostly a studio artist in printmaking and textiles. Drawn by the stunning California weather and landscape, I have devoted the last two months almost exclusively to plein air painting, being outdoors 5 days a week.
Painting in nature, the artist becomes the nature. The brush is guided by the wind, the tide, the sun, the shadow. We are but a media to carry out a vision calling from within, unfolding as we submit to its power. Let go of the self, let go of all preset knowledge and planning. Embrace the moment. Be.

Fine Art Photographer and Abstract Artist David Perea was born in Arequipa, Peru. Having lived in and traveled throughout many countries, David considers himself a citizen of the world. He is now a California based internationally awarded artist and poet and his artwork has evolved into visionary dimensions that challenge impressions and perceptions of ourselves and of our planet.

David has published several multilingual books and ebooks of mixed media, art photography and poetry. David has experimented with several mediums, such as poetry, Videography, mixed media, and collage, but art photography tend to be his most preferred medium.
His work has been included in the Photography Fashion Collection at the Fifth Annual Exposure Award 2015, presented at the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. David has been covered in many press stories and has been featured on “Important World Artists Vol I” , Big Screen Plaza NYC from Kimpton Hotels NY, Artslant, ArtPeople, Where Magazine SF, The Huffington Post, Legally Vogue, NY Arts Magazine, Haute Magazine.

Ryan Montgomery is the founder and lead designer on all projects created by Geary and Hyde Design. We produce a large range of projects from large scale installations like the Dustfish stage, The Ice Pyrates “Ice Hull” and the Ghost Ship Portal to smaller signs and custom commissioned artwork. We apply a unique approach to create one-off custom designs for each and every client. Every project is given the greatest attention to detail and is looked upon as an exciting challenge.

Collaboration is the key to success at Geary and Hyde Design. The Bay Area has an abundance of talent and we’re very fortunate to have some incredibly smart friends. Jamie is an artist, wife, and mother in her 30’s living in San Francisco. Born and raised in Idaho, she studied French language and literature at the University of Idaho. Art has long been a hobby and an outlet of hers, but during the isolation of 2020’s quarantine (combined with being a new mom), it became more of a lifeline. Through this rediscovered passion, Jamie has been using her art to work through and share some of the new life changes she is experiencing and processing older emotions. The intention behind this body of work is that the delicate nature of the florals, and of the watercolor to depict them, are highlighted by the stark nature of the acrylic backgrounds. Their softness is their strength. She hopes that in sharing this work, she can connect with other people who may be experiencing the same things and celebrate their strength.

Jamie’s work has been featured in City Art Gallery, San Francisco Woman Artist Gallery, as well as Far Out Gallery.

Rusty Weston is a fine art photographer and content creator in San Francisco, CA. A former journalist, Weston’s work in portraiture and landscapes explores the stresses that impinge on urban life and the natural world. Weston’s “Of the Mission” is a new series of environmental-style portraits celebrating people who live or work in San Francisco’s Mission District — his home for the past decade. His photography has appeared in exhibitions in the U.S., Italy, Scotland, and Japan, including at the 2023 de Young Open in S.F. and the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia, along with Galerie XII in Santa Monica, Praxis Gallery in Minneapolis, the Harvey Milk Photo Center and Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco. Weston is a member of the Bay Area Photographers Collective.

David Maldonado (who goes by Chasindoodles, and can be found at chasindoodles.com) is an artist in San Francisco who works with acrylic, linocuts,photography and digital work. Themes of his work are masculine forms with mid-century elements as well as cityscapes, tiki, and abstract work. Previous exhibitions his work has made an appearance at are ACCI Gallery, City Arts Co-op, Sausalito Center for the Arts, Rosebud Gallery, Lynn Museum, and Off the Wall Gallery.

Argh, what a bummer! Sharing some sad news that Upside Artspace was burgled early Monday morning around 2:10am PDT. The thief defeated the latch on our back door, grabbed thousands of dollars worth of tools, and walked out the front minutes later. SFPD arrived quickly, but not in time to catch the thief.

The shared tool bay was not impacted, so the shop remains functional for Upside members. We are planning at least a few changes to reduce the likelihood of this happening again.

Never thought we'd pine for the days of Brick Lady, but this is clearly worse ☹️
